Yep, Kia just dropped a huge neutron bombshell with the 2022 EV6. This isn’t just Kia’s version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. No. It’s more than that. The EV6 heralds Kia’s push into a sportier direction as it goes all-in on electrification. There’s more to come, too, because this is barely the opening salvo. The EV6 is the first of six Kia vehicles that will be underpinned by Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture, which is dedicated specifically for use on electric vehicles. It’s also part of an offensive that aims to introduce 11 EVs from Kia alone and a total of 23 from all three Hyundai Motor Group brands.
Available in standard and long-range versions the Kia EV6 will get your choice of a 58- or 77.4-kWh battery. The latter will get a WLTP-estimated 316 miles per charge in RWD form. AWD models should get slightly less range but make more power and torque.
Perhaps the biggest news is the EV6 GT. This high-performance version makes 577 hp and 545 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Yes, there’s now a Kia that can accelerate like a Porsche Taycan and it even has an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential. Let that sink in for a minute before continuing on the regularly scheduled programming. Call the EV6 GT a crossover, a hatchback, a rally car, a hot hatch in disguise but there’s definitely one thing you can call it: a performance car.
