The Chevrolet Silverado 1500’s new exterior design may be a bit polarizing but make no mistake this truck has a lot of substance when equipped with the optional diesel engine. Unlike its competitors from Ford and Ram, the Silverado 1500 and its GMC sibling, the Sierra 1500 use a a 3.0-liter inline-six instead of a V6. As a result, you get a silky smooth engine that offers a lot of torque and capability. This turbocharged oil burner may be just be the best of its kind thanks to how well-rounded its powertrain is.
Where the Silverado 1500 lags behind is in the interior quality. Unlike the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, the Chevy’s fit and finish disappoints because of the extensive use of hard plastics on nearly every surface. The cabin design, especially the dash, barely changed from the outgoing truck, meaning you might even mistake it for the older model. At least General Motors’ infotainment system remains one of the most user-friendly in the market.
In order to get the diesel engine in the Silverado, you must move up to at least the LT trim in double cab configuration. From there, you can choose between RWD or 4WD and make your truck as luxurious as possible with trims like the High Country.
