I think shrinking sedan sales are part of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It goes like this: families want crossovers, so we should focus on driving dynamics and styling to appeal to the remaining pool. This results in a less practical sedan, driving more families away from the mid-size sedan driving it further down the “sporty” rabbit hole. But there are a few options which have bucked this trend and the Passat is one of them. It has a big back seat, tons of legroom and a spacious trunk. The fuel economy is good and the design is uncontroversial. Can it attract some of the former demographic back?
